This will be a spoiler free review.

WHY did I wait so long to read this? I got it in a long past Owlcrate, and it’s just sat on my shelf undoubtedly collecting dust. But as part of my goal for this year – reading backlist books and books I already own – I decided to put it on my TBR and I loved it.

It was a little hard to get into, but once I was in, I was absorbed. I blew through the book and once I read the last page, I legit flipped back to make sure I wasn’t missing any of the story, because I couldn’t believe that was the end of the book. I was so mad that I didn’t already own the second book, THE CURSED SEA (which I didn’t buy on its release because I was being good and not buying the sequel for a book I hadn’t yet read).

I really liked Wil – stealthy, badass, and full of magic – the ability to turn people and living things to gems? Detrimental, but so cool.

It’s only just hit me that this is a kind of “King Midas” retelling and I’m really excited to see how the second book is going to wrap up her story.

As for her brothers, I really like them. Especially how different they all were, and who Wil connected with.

And Loom – cursed in his own way, they have this inexplicable connection that draws them to each other. I really like this idea of “fated lovers” and how it poses the question “do they love me for me, or because they have no other choice?” I’m guaranteed to read any book with it in it, even if it may drive me mad at times.

The world building in this book worked for me. I thought it was so lush and vibrant and it was so easy to picture everything. I’ve never read anything by Lauren DeStefano before so I don’t have anything to compare this to, but if this is how she normally writes, I’m here for it. I absolutely loved this book, and now that I have the second one in my possession, I cannot wait to start it and see how Wil and Loom’s story plays out.

Currently Reading & Watching #4

Image result for reading gifsI forgot to do one of these posts in May, so better late than never! I’m five books, almost six into July, so reading is going great, watching has kind of trickled off. This tends to happen to me, and is probably pretty relatable. I go through cycles of watching everything and reading nothing, but on the flip side, there are times where I read everything and watch nothing – there is rarely an in-between. I have a lot of reading I need to get done, so I’m kind of okay with not really having a show to sit and binge.

Anyways – here’s what I’m reading and watching!

BOOKS:

The Girl the Sea Gave Back – Adrienne Young

I’m about 84% into this book and I had no idea that this was a sequel/companion to Sky in the Deep. I just thought it was a new fantasy by the same author. I’m definitely interested in reading the first book, but this one is proving to be kind of a let-down, unfortunately. I won’t go into too much detail since I’ll have a full review of this up shortly, but I’m not connecting with the characters or the story.

Little Fires Everywhere – Celeste Ng

I don’t want to read this book. I wouldn’t have picked this book up in the store. It’s my book club’s choice so I’m trying to force my way through it. I don’t really care for the writing style or the story in general. As of right now, it’s saving grace is that it’s just over 300 pages, so I should be able to knock it out pretty quickly if I can just sit down long enough to read it.

Becoming the Dark Prince – Kerri Maniscalco

I legit just finished this, so I’m including it. A Thomas Cresswell novella published on my birthday…happy birthday to me! I really enjoyed this all too brief look into Cresswell’s mind. I could read the entire series from his point of view. Though, this did remind me of my rage towards Wadsworth in Escaping from Houdini which wasn’t necessarily fun, but I’m super excited for Capturing the Devil and September is so far away.

SHOWS:

Glee (Netflix)

I just finished this last night, so it’s going in this post. I never actually watched it through to the end when it was airing so this was part rewatch/watch for the first time. I really enjoyed the end of the show, thought it wrapped up in a satisfying way. I’m going to kind of miss watching it every night.

The Expanse (Prime)

I’m like episodes away from finishing this show, and just need to sit down and do it, but meh. I like the show, don’t get me wrong, but I took a break and now I’m not that invested anymore.

The 100 (Live TV)

This. Show. I hate waiting each week. I love the show and the characters, and it really is the perfect binge show to get lost in. With this current season, it’s even harder to wait because so much is happening. Also, holy slow burn relationship between Bellamy and Clarke. I don’t know if they’re endgame in the show, but dammit, I wish they would kiss at least ONE TIME.

QOTD: What are you currently reading and/or watching?

ALA Book Haul

I asked and you answered!

Image result for ala annualOkay, you’re going to have to bear with me for this post – it’s definitely going to be a really long one. ALA was amazing – it was the first time I had ever gone to ALA or any event like it and going in, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I only had the BEA / BookCon horror stories to base my expectations on. Though, most people told me that ALA would be chill, and it was. Even at its most chaotic, it was still pretty calm, and it was handled really well. The most chaotic was leading up to the ARC drop for The Starless Sea, but Penguin got that under control very quickly and handled it very efficiently – or so I thought. Others weren’t so happy, but I believe that’s more because they weren’t able to get a ticket to guarantee them a copy of the book. I totally understand their frustration, I’ve been to other (signing) book events where lines haven’t been handled well, and I’ve missed out.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at ALA, definitely got way more than I ever anticipated getting, and now I have so much to read, it’s a bit ridiculous. I wasn’t expecting publishers to just hand me books, and that’s what happened. I didn’t expect to leave the event after two days with 40+ books. I pretty much was able to get all the books I wanted on the first day and was able to then grab a few books for two friends who had to cancel last minute due to personal reasons and my mom. I did make it a point to not just randomly grab. There might be one or two titles that were more shoved my way, versus me just grabbing them, but everything I grabbed, I either knew about it going in, or I read the back and it sounded interesting enough to make me want to potentially read it.

My plan is now to read as many as a can, as efficiently as I can so I can pass on some of these ARCs to other readers. I’m trying to read them according to release, but I have a feeling I’m going to get behind, very quickly.

Anyways, I should stop talking, and get into the haul! I’ll split it up between what I got for me, for my friends and my mom, just for the sake of some organization. Also, there are a few repeats, so I won’t be including the cover or part of synopsis.

43152985As Many Nows As I Can Get – Shana Youngdahl

GR

In one impulsive moment the summer before they leave for college, overachievers Scarlett and David plunge into an irresistible swirl of romance, particle physics, and questionable decisions. Told in non-linear, vivid first-person chapters, As Many Nows As I Can Get is the story of a grounded girl who’s pulled into a lightning-strike romance with an electric-charged boy, and the enormity of the aftermath. Cerebral, accessible, bold, and unconventionally romantic, this is a powerful debut about grief, guilt, and reconciling who you think you need to be with the person you’ve been all along.

Phew, that took forever. I’m beyond grateful that I was able to go to ALA and experience it. I was even able to get two ARCs to fellow readers who were desperate for them. It wasn’t planned, but I’m happy to have been able to make them happy with anticipated reads.

If ALA is something within your budget, I highly recommend you go! You’ll get tons of books, and finally meet the people you talk with on Twitter in person!

QOTD: Which of these books are you most excited about?

Quarterly Anticipated Releases #3

I’m so happy that I chose to do these Quarterly Release posts, because if you look back at my Anticipated Reads for 2019 post, there are like no books for late summer/fall/winter. But that is also why I chose to these posts. To catch all the books I might’ve missed, or that were announced later in the year. There are sequels included in this post – with their synopses! (Just a heads up)

With that being said, let’s jump into the books that are on my radar for July, August and September. And if I’ve missed any, or didn’t mention something that you loved, or that should be on my radar, let me know in the comments!

JULY:

40517898Queen of Ruin – Tracy Banghart

Pub. Date: July 2, 2019

GR

I still haven’t gotten to the first book in this series, but someone I trust read the first one, and her review tells me that I will, so eventually I’ll get to this sequel. Regardless, this story sounds amazing.

Banished by Asa at the end of Grace and Fury, Nomi and Malachi find themselves powerless and headed towards their all-but-certain deaths. Now that Asa sits on the throne, he will stop at nothing to make sure Malachi never sets foot in the palace again. Their only hope is to find Nomi’s sister, Serina, on the prison island of Mount Ruin. But when Nomi and Malachi arrive, it is not the island of conquered, broken women that they expected. It is an island in the grip of revolution, and Serina–polite, submissive Serina–is its leader.

Betrayal, grief, and violence have changed both sisters, and the women of Mount Ruin have their sights set on revenge beyond the confines of their island prison. They plan to sweep across the entire kingdom, issuing in a new age of freedom for all. But first they’ll have to get rid of Asa, and only Nomi knows how.

Separated once again, this time by choice, Nomi and Serina must forge their own paths as they aim to tear down the world they know, and build something better in its place.

38330596The Storm Crow – Kalyn Josephson

Pub. Date: July 9, 2019

GR

I have and ARC of this book, but unfortunately won’t be getting to it before release, but I am planning on reading it this month. It sounds really interesting and I’m excited to give it a go.

In the tropical kingdom of Rhodaire, magical, elemental Crows are part of every aspect of life…until the Illucian empire invades, destroying everything.

That terrible night has thrown Princess Anthia into a deep depression. Her sister Caliza is busy running the kingdom after their mother’s death, but all Thia can do is think of all she has lost.

But when Caliza is forced to agree to a marriage between Thia and the crown prince of Illucia, Thia is finally spurred into action. And after stumbling upon a hidden Crow egg in the rubble of a rookery, she and her sister devise a dangerous plan to hatch the egg in secret and get back what was taken from them.

45361401Failed Future – Elise Kova

Pub. Date: July 21, 2019

GR

I actually just finished this book and it was phenomenal. Elise was kind enough to send me an advanced copy of Failed Future and she does something I don’t think anyone will expect and it will blow your mind. You’re not ready.

When worlds collide, and things are rarely what they seem, there may be no one Vi can trust.

Having forsaken her crown for a chance to save her family, and the world, Vi Solaris washes up on the shores of Meru. She’s wounded and barely alive. But Vi’s fight for survival is only just beginning.

As a princess in a foreign land, everyone is after her.

The pirate queen Adela wants to sell her to the evil elfin’ra. The Twilight King wants to use her to settle an old score. And, perhaps most dangerous, is the scheming Lord of the Faithful who sees her as an opportunity to further consolidate his power.

AUGUST:

39679076House of Salt and Sorrows – Erin A. Craig

Pub. Date: August 6, 2019

GR

I was gifted a copy of this book from Netgalley and I cannot wait to dive into it! It sounds amazing and I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. I plan on getting to this very soon!

In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor, a manor by the sea, with her sisters, their father, and stepmother. Once they were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls’ lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last—the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge—and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.

Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that the deaths were no accidents. Her sisters have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn’t sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who—or what—are they really dancing with?

When Annaleigh’s involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family—before it claims her next.

36678876. sy475 The Last Hope – Krista & Becca Ritchie

Pub. Date: August 13, 2019

GR

I can’t believe I have an ARC of this book. I absolutely loved The Raging Ones and I cannot wait to see how this story comes to a close for these characters. If you haven’t already, make sure you check out the first book and you can check out my review for it here.

Sacrifice all you have to survive.

Imprisoned for weeks on an enemy starcraft, Franny, Court, and Mykal have sat with an unfathomable revelation. But as they fight to stay alive, escaping prison means trusting a young mysterious stranger. He knows everything about their lost histories, and when answers aren’t given freely, the bonded trio are forced to join a mission. One that will determine the fate of humanity.

Legend says, a baby―the first of her species―has the power to cloak and teleport planets. Tasked with retrieving the infant, Court fears the baby is just a myth, and if they fail, they’ll never find the truth about their origins.

As Court and Mykal grow closer, their linked bond becomes harder to hide, and dynamics change when Franny begins to fall for someone new. Vulnerable and with no choice, the hunt for the baby sends the trio on a dangerous path to Saltare-1: a water world where their enemies can’t die and survival comes at a high cost.

37777083. sy475 Crown of Coral and Pearl – Mara Rutherford

Pub. Date: August 27, 2019

GR

I picked this up while at ALA and it sounds really interesting. I’ve heard some mix reactions – none of them wholly bad, but I’m curious to sit down and read it. I probably won’t get to it before release unfortunately, but soon!

For generations, the princes of Ilara have married the most beautiful maidens from the ocean village of Varenia. But though every girl longs to be chosen as the next princess, the cost of becoming royalty is higher than any of them could ever imagine…

Nor once dreamed of seeing the wondrous wealth and beauty of Ilara, the kingdom that’s ruled her village for as long as anyone can remember. But when a childhood accident left her with a permanent scar, it became clear that her identical twin sister, Zadie, would likely be chosen to marry the Crown Prince—while Nor remained behind, unable to ever set foot on land.

Then Zadie is gravely injured, and Nor is sent to Ilara in her place. To Nor’s dismay, her future husband, Prince Ceren, is as forbidding and cold as his home—a castle carved into a mountain and devoid of sunlight. And as she grows closer to Ceren’s brother, the charming Prince Talin, Nor uncovers startling truths about a failing royal bloodline, a murdered queen… and a plot to destroy the home she was once so eager to leave.

In order to save her people, Nor must learn to negotiate the treacherous protocols of a court where lies reign and obsession rules. But discovering her own formidable strength may be the one move that costs her everything: the crown, Varenia and Zadie.

SEPTEMBER:

40024139Serpent & Dove – Shelby Mahurin

Pub. Date: September 3, 2019

GR

Based off the synopsis alone, this sounds amazing. I can’t wait to read it and hopefully fall in love. It’s a thick book and I’ve heard some good things!

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

42867937The Girl the Sea Gave Back – Adrienne Young

Pub. Date: September 3, 2019

GR

I have an eARC of this and once I finish my current read, I think I’m going to dive into this next. I can usually get through eBooks relatively quickly, so I’ll probably knock this one out, plus the other eARC I have.

For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse.

For the first time in generations, the leaders of the Svell are divided. Should they maintain peace or go to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a series of events that will not only change the landscape of the mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could never have again—a home.

43744300American Royals – Katharine McGee

Pub. Date: September 3, 2019

GR

I have a copy of this and I’m so excited! I’m definitely reading this soon and I cannot wait! I read The Thousandth Floor when it came out and loved it (didn’t know it was part of a trilogy) and so I’m excited to see what in store for me with this new book.

Two princesses vying for the ultimate crown.
Two girls vying for the prince’s heart.
This is the story of the American royals.

When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne. Like most royal families, the Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these aren’t just any royals. They’re American. And their country was born of rebellion.

As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America’s first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she’s breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn’t care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her. And then there’s Samantha’s twin, Prince Jefferson. If he’d been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.

The duty. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded–and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.

43822758The Lady Rogue – Jenn Bennett

Pub. Date: September 10, 2019

GR

The synopsis sold me on this as did the cover and it just sounds completely amazing and I can’t wait to get my hands on it and read it!

Some legends never die…

Traveling with her treasure-hunting father has always been a dream for Theodora. She’s read every book in his library, has an impressive knowledge of the world’s most sought-after relics, and has all the ambition in the world. What she doesn’t have is her father’s permission. That honor goes to her father’s nineteen-year-old protégé—and once-upon-a-time love of Theodora’s life—Huck Gallagher, while Theodora is left to sit alone in her hotel in Istanbul.

Until Huck arrives from an expedition without her father and enlists Theodora’s help in rescuing him. Armed with her father’s travel journal, the reluctant duo learns that her father had been digging up information on a legendary and magical ring that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler—more widely known as Dracula—and that it just might be the key to finding him.

Journeying into Romania, Theodora and Huck embark on a captivating adventure through Gothic villages and dark castles in the misty Carpathian Mountains to recover the notorious ring. But they aren’t the only ones who are searching for it. A secretive and dangerous occult society with a powerful link to Vlad the Impaler himself is hunting for it, too. And they will go to any lengths—including murder—to possess it.

Pub. Date: September 10, 2019

GR

When I heard about this book coming out, saw the cover, read the synopsis I knew I was going to read it. Then I went out and bought her other book The Light Between Worlds…and I still haven’t read it. LOL Regardless, I have a copy of this, and I can’t wait to read it!

Violet Sterling has spent the last seven years in exile, longing to return to Burleigh House. One of the six great houses of England, Burleigh’s magic always kept the countryside well. And as a child, this magic kept Violet happy, draping her in flowers while she slept, fashioning secret hiding places for her, and lighting fires on the coldest nights to keep her warm.

Everything shattered, though, when her father committed high treason trying to free Burleigh from the king’s oppressive control. He was killed, and Vi was forced into hiding.

When she’s given a chance to go back, she discovers Burleigh has run wild with grief. Vines and briars are crumbling the walls. Magic that once enriched the surrounding countryside has turned dark and deadly, twisting lush blooms into thorns, poisoning livestock and destroying crops. Burleigh’s very soul is crying out in pain.

Vi would do anything to help, and soon she finds herself walking the same deadly path as her father all those years before. Vi must decide how far she’s willing to go to save her house—before her house destroys everything she’s ever known.

40712557The Hidden Code – P.J. Hoover

Pub. Date: September 10, 2019

GR

This wasn’t even on my radar until ALA, and I was sold when my friends said it was a mix between Lara Croft and The Da Vinci Code. So, of course I grabbed it!

Eleven years ago, Hannah Hawkins’ parents disappeared while traveling abroad. Presumed dead, Hannah and her uncle are shocked when a letter from her mom arrives right after Hannah’s sixteenth birthday. By piecing together cryptic hints from the note and other clues left behind, Hannah realizes her parents disappeared while trying to find the mysterious Code of Enoch. An artifact they believed could hold the key to curing disease—or creating it—Hannah’s parents had been determined to destroy the Code, no matter the cost. Now with the help of her uncle, her best friend, and another cute but not entirely trust-worthy guy, Hannah sets out to discover what happened to her parents and if the Code of Enoch is real.

Shatter City – Scott Westerfeld

Pub. Date: September 17, 2019

GR

I saw this at ALA and knew I had to grab it. Uglies was probably one of the very first YA books I read, back before YA was really the thing it is now, and I absolutely loved it. I read Imposters last year and really enjoyed it, so I’m really excited for this second installment.

When the world sees Frey, they think they see her twin sister Rafi. Frey was raised to be Rafi’s double, and now she’s taken on the role . . . without anyone else knowing.

Her goal? To destroy the forces that created her.

But with the world watching and a rebellion rising, Frey is forced into a detour. Suddenly she is stranded on her own in Paz, a city where many of the citizens attempt to regulate their emotions through an interface on their arms. Paz is an easy place to get lost . . . and also an easy place to lose yourself.

As the city comes under a catastrophic attack, Frey must leave the shadows and enter the chaos of warfare – because there is no other way for her to find her missing sister and have her revenge against her murderous father.

38475566Bid My Soul Farewell – Beth Revis

Pub. Date: September 24, 2019

GR

I was able to read the first book in this duology early last year, and I enjoyed it. It wasn’t a favorite, but I definitely liked it enough to see how the story comes to a close. Hopefully I’ll get to read it before release!

Alchemy student turned necromancer Nedra Brysstain has made a life-changing decision to embrace the darkness–but can the boy who loves her bring her back to the light before she pays the ultimate price?

Lunar Island is trying to heal. The necromantic plague that ravaged the land has been eradicated, and Emperor Auguste, the young and charming leader of the Allyrian Empire, has a plan: rid the island of necromancy once and for all. Though Greggori “Grey” Astor wants what’s best for his people, he knows that allying himself with Auguste threatens the one person he loves most: necromancer Nedra Brysstain. Feeling like he already failed to save Nedra once, Grey becomes determined to help the Emperor rebuild Lunar Island while still keeping Nedra safe from harm.

Back at the quarantine hospital, Nedra’s army of revenants are growing increasingly inhuman by the day. Wracked with guilt for imprisoning their souls, Nedra vows to discover a way to free the dead while still keeping her sister by her side.

But, still reeling from the trauma of the plague, the people of Lunar Island are looking for someone to blame, and Grey can only protect Nedra for so long. And when Nedra and Grey are thrust into a battle with an even more terrifying adversary, Nedra will be pushed to the darkest depths of her necromantic powers. But can Grey let her go that far?

QOTD: What’s your most anticipated release coming out in the next three months?

July/August/September TBR!

It’s that time of the year again – three more months have passed, and my TBR isn’t really any smaller. Granted I acquired quite a lot last month alone…oops. My new goal is to read 19 books by the end of September. Maybe it’s a bit ambitious, maybe I’ll fly through them and be able to read things I didn’t pick out…I have a feeling it’s the former.

Some of these books you’ll recognize from my last TBR post – because I just never got to them. I hit a little bit of a reading slump last month which sucked.  So they are kind of priority reads this month, even though I just want to read all the books I got at ALA – that post will be up later this week. Keep an eye out for it!

Like last month, these books are in no particular order – except for the six books tacked onto the end. Yes, the ones facing pages out – I will be reading those within the next three months, but they are the books I’m taking with me on my beach trip. There will be a whole post dedicated to them closer to the end of the months and I didn’t want to spoil the surprise!

I’m really excited for all of these books and I cannot wait to have them ruin me – I’m 2 for 2 already this month, and waiting for the next books is already torture.

Anyways – let’s take a look at my ambitions TBR for the next three months. Two of the books are eARC’s I received via Netgalley!

June Book Haul!

I’m not really sure how I managed to accumulate so many books in June, but I did. It happened. And this is on top of everything I hauled from ALA – that post is coming soon, I promise! Twitter has spoken, and they want that post.

But back to this specific haul – I have no idea where any of these books are going to go. I think it might be time for another unhaul, because oh my god, I’m out of shelf space.

Image result for book haul gifs

I’m super excited for all of these, some I’ve already read, and acquired for collection purposes, but the majority are books that I’ve never read, but have been interested in for quite a while and I’m so excited to finally have them in my possession. Hopefully they won’t sit on my shelf unread for years to come LOL. I didn’t spend a lot of money, despite the sheer size of this haul – many of the books were from Books For Trade on Twitter, for the cost of shipping, others were discount books from a used book store, and only a handful were bought full price. So, while it’s a lot, my wallet isn’t hurting too badly.

Anyways, let’s look at the books I hauled in June!

*Side note – I’m going to be doing this post a little different than past Haul post, due to the sheer number of books. I’m going to forgo the book synopsis, otherwise this post is going to be so incredibly long. I’m also going to group by author.

I used to have the first three books in hardcover, but when I found out that the last two were only coming out in paperback, I gave them away – not to mention that the covers don’t match after book 2. I was in a Half-Price Books and the first five were in there for a price I couldn’t pass up, so I bought them. I love these books and are definite binge books and the audiobooks are amazing. Check them out if you haven’t already!

Phew! That was a lot. I’m sorry. I hope that all the books I haven’t had a chance to read are amazing and I hope that I can get to them soon. July is going to be a definite Book Buying Ban Month. If you have read any of these books, let me know in the comments!

June Wrap-Up

June Wrap-Up

June wasn’t a super strong reading month, but it wasn’t a bad one either. With the end of the month ending up super hectic from ALA, to book signings, to family vacations where it’s hard to get a minute alone without being labeled “anti-social” I didn’t get to read everything I wanted to.Image result for reading gifs

I enjoyed everything I was able to read this last month, so that is a bonus, and even though it’s now July (and I’m still on vacation) I was able to disappear for roughly 2.5 hours outside, on a swing and read a little over half a book, so all’s * kind of * right in my world and I should have my first book for the month finished tomorrow.

But, we’re not here for July’s Wrap-Up – stay tuned for that!

Anyways, let’s check out the few books I did manage to get to during June!

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 (PB Finished 6/1/19) GR Review

Talia and Will would rather get space-tossed than trust one another, but with the queen’s forces chasing them across the galaxy and the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance, they’ll forge the unlikeliest of alliances to survive.

I enjoyed this book, and glad I pushed my through the beginning of the book – which confused me. I could easily read another book set in this world. I won’t go into too much detail since I have a full review for this posted, but if you’re looking for a good sci-fi and are fans of Firefly, Dark Matter, etc…you’ll definitely want to check this out.

White Hot KissWhite Hot Kiss – Jennifer L. Armentrout

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(PB Finished 6/2/19) GR Review

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

I’ve been slowly making my way through JLA’s backlist as a re-read, since it’s been quite a while, but I mainly picked this up after having read Storm and Fury. It had been so long, and I barely remembered what had happened in the original series. I have a full review posted, but if you haven’t checked out The Dark Elements series yet, you should!

shadowsShadows – Jennifer L. Armentrout

⭐️⭐️⭐️(PB Finished 6/3/19) GR Review

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.
This was another re-read…at least I think it was. To be completely honest, I’m not sure I ever read the prequel to the Lux Series. I remembered none of it. Either way, it was still a good read, but use your own discretion on whether you read it before jumping into the series or after.

81hdraah2xlObsidian – Jennifer L. Armentrout

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(PB Finished 6/6/19) GR Review

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Again, another re-read – 2019 is turning into the year I read all of JLA’s backlist. It was fun visiting this world again and being reacquainted with Daemon. This was probably one of the first YA books I read and was probably a huge reason for me getting into the genre when I did. I have a full review of this book posted, but you should definitely check out the Lux Series if you’re into aliens. If you liked the CW’s Roswell, you’ll like Obsidian.

warrior of the wildWarrior of the Wild – Tricia Levenseller

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(HC Finished 6/7/19) GR

To win back her honor, she must kill the oppressive god who claims tribute from the villages each year—or die trying.

I really enjoyed this book and wish it had been a bit longer. I will say that I didn’t love it as much as her Duology, but I’m not sure if the fact that I listened to the audiobooks for the other two carries any weight. This was definitely a quick, enjoyable read, with a favorable outcome, and a twist I didn’t see coming. Hopefully I’ll have a full review up sometime this month, so keep an eye out for that!

the glass spareThe Glass Spare – Lauren DeStefano

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5(HC Finished 6/20/19) GR

With a world on the brink of war and a power of ultimate destruction, can Wil find a way to help the kingdom that’s turned its back on her, or will she betray her past and her family forever?

Omfg. I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. I got it in an Owlcrate box from forever ago, and it’s been sitting on my shelf ever since. One reading goal of 2019 was to read some of my unread books, and this was one of them, and I’m mad I don’t currently own book 2. This was such a good fantasy and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Hopefully I’ll have a review up later this month!

an unwanted guest tAn Unwanted Guest – Shari Lapena

⭐️⭐️⭐️(HC Finished 6/21/19) GR

Within the snowed-in paradise, something–or someone–is picking off the guests one by one. They can’t leave, and with no cell service, there’s no prospect of getting the police in until the weather loosens its icy grip.

This was my book club’s pick, and I most likely wouldn’t have picked it up off the shelf. I absolutely hated the writing style – third person, present tense, with sentences that felt like a fifth grader wrote them. It was so hard to actually get lost in the book with the way it was written. Plot-wise, it wasn’t a bad book, but I kind of saw the twist coming, and there was an absolutely and utterly pointless character death that held no importance to the story. Overall, it wasn’t a bad story. If you’d like a full rant-y review of this book, let me know, otherwise I probably won’t review it beyond this.
