I enjoyed this book. I thought the world was interesting, the characters engaging, and the writing was pretty strong.

The premise of this book is exactly what I’ve been craving and inhaling recently. So, I’m glad I enjoyed it. While this book had some really strong elements going for it – I wish it had been longer.

I say that, because I had such issues with the pacing. Everything happened in the book at breakneck pace, which left very, very little time for emotional attachments. With everything happening so quickly and swaths of time being glossed over, the emotional weights were missing. For me, this meant that the relationship between Leith and Kyler was lacking.

Individually I liked them – and I think with more time, they could have been incredibly deep and complex characters. But together, I just didn’t buy their relationship.

I also found the graphic sex scenes, just that, graphic. I didn’t really feel the connection between the two of them because of the lack of time spent getting to know them. They only have a handful of encounters before they give into temptation.

I will also say, that due to the breakneck speed, the ending felt really unsatisfying. Everything just happened so fast, I found it a little hard to follow.

Again, all my issues with this book stem from the sheer lack of time spent in the world and with the characters. This book is only 176 pages, and a lot of plot is packed into a very limited space. I don’t mean to be overly harsh, or even harsh at all. This book could have been a new favorite if there had just been more. While I definitely enjoyed it, I can’t help but wish that there had been more pages, more world building, emotional weights for characters…just more time with the plot in general.

Overall, I think this book has a lot of potential, and as it stands, it makes for an enjoyable read, especially if you want a short, fantasy with some spicier elements. I don’t think anyone can be fully disappointed with this book, especially if you’re like me and you’re absolute trash for books like this.
